When I first started souledUp, I had the pleasure to meet up with Phil Asher, be invited into his family home and interview him. I was touched by the warmness and sincerity of the man, and the fact that I am a huge fan of his production made it all the more sweeter for me.
The last time I saw Phil was at the Southport Weekender in 2006. Bugz in the Attic were playing in the then B-Bar, and Phil was producing and remxing a lot of broken beat stuff. Stuff with the Bugz, stuff on his own Restless Soul label, whatever he turned his hand to, it seemed Phlash couldn't do anything wrong the music he was involved with.
I recently had a long telephone conversation with Phil about this interview, and was surprised in a good way, at some of what he said. Although one of the pioneers of the broken beat sound that originated from West London, Phil was keen to emphasise that he isn't a one dimensional man
